Newry needs a city park. The Albert Basin represents a unique opportunity to build a world-class green space in the heart of the community. Closely connected to the urban centre and at the same intimately linked to the natural environment, the site is the perfect location for a "green lung". It is a project that could regenerate and revitalise an historical part of the city. Numerous local organisations and almost 2,000 individuals have expressed their support via an online petition.
Now we want you to design your dream park in Minecraft!
The Competition
- Each team will use Minecraft to design and build a city park for Newry
- The competition is open to all under-16's in the greater Newry area
- All teams will present their ideas at a presentation ceremony on 21st May
- The winning design will be judged out by a panel representing community organisations from the Albert Basin Regeneration Group
Project Resources
The following resources will be made available to participating teams:
- An empty Minecraft map based on the Albert Basin site
- Community-developed reference materials, including outline plans and detailed design concepts
Essential Features
The resource pack will include outline plans that can be used for inspiration. While imaginative proposals will be welcomed, the following facilities should be included:
- Marina
- Skatepark
- Arboretum
- Children's playground
- Outdoor gym equipment
- Cafe/Interpretive Centre/Small Marina Building (1-3 small buildings)
Note that access roads may be included, but we want to maximise green space and the presence of cars should be minimised. Additional features may be included, particularly if they create value for park users and can be effectively integrated into the overall design.
Judging Criteria
- Functionality - The park should offer something for visitors of all ages, interests and abilities.
- Visual impact - Entries will be scored on visual appeal, creativity and attention to detail.
- Contextual awareness - Teams should take into account the physical, cultural and historical context of the site.
- Originality - While the design should be consistent with the existing vision, originality and imagination are strongly encouraged.
Judging will take place at a presentation event on 21st May. Participating teams will be invited along to present their designs and talk about the vision, design and construction process. The winning team will be awarded Minecraft-themed prizes, and all teams will have their work promoted through the media to raise awareness of the campaign for a city park.
